Description of the Course
Graduate student interns are assigned to work with an experienced faculty member at a Chicago-area two-year college. Interns attend every class; tutor students in and outside of class; participate in classroom activities, prepare and present lessons (in consultation with the mentor), and may assist the instructor with paper grading. Interns also may attend faculty meetings and participate in registration, advising, and college assessment activities. The internships vary according to the college: most are unpaid, a few include a small stipend; some are in the City College system, others are in the suburbs; many interns obtain part-time teaching jobs after completing the internship.
Fall Internships operate on the semester calendar, beginning in late August and ending in December. You will register for ENG 509 (Independent Study, requiring instructor’s approval) and you will receive an “R” grade until your work is complete. ENG 509-Teaching Internship is an on-line class with readings, discussions, journals, and a final reflective essay. The on-line course and the in-class experience will prepare you to apply for teaching jobs at the end of the semester (or whenever you are ready).
Two-Year College internships are intended for people with no (or very little) teaching experience. This is an excellent opportunity to experience classroom teaching in a mentored environment and to test the waters of a possible career.
Your Internship class will most likely meet twice a week. You will be responsible for attending (and co-teaching) the class, but also you need to allow time to meet with your mentor and students. So, you should plan to be at your college for several hours on your teaching days.
Internship classes usually occur in the daytime, but occasionally there are evening classes.
Colleges accepting interns this Fall are: Truman College, Wright College, Harold Washington College, South Suburban College, and the College of Lake County.
