Career Night for English Students
First, James Phelps, Undergraduate Advisor, will discuss how students can best prepare themselves for the various careers open to English graduates. Second, Chris Green, Director of Internships will discuss the English Department’s Internship Program. Then, the following panel will present career options in non-profits and answer student questions.
Panel: Careers in Non-Profits for English Students
Zach Duffy currently serves as the Director of Education at 826CHI.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, with a major in English and an emphasis on Creative Writing. Upon graduation, Zach1 taught in public schools for more than three years, two spent in Chicago Public Schools through Teach for America, where he taught second and third grade at Yale Elementary School, in the Englewood community. Zach also previously served as the Grants Communication Manager at Perspectives Charter School, as Development Director at Street Level Youth Media, and as the Director of Development at 826CHI
Tim Jones-Yelvington is an author, performer, and nonprofit worker.
After completing his undergrad at DePaul in 2007 with a degree in Women’s and Gender Studies, he served for nearly five years as program staff at Crossroads Fund, a public foundation that supports grassroots community organizing groups through grants and technical assistance. Currently, he works with Foresight Design Initiative, a sustainability and innovation organization, supporting the creation of a sustainability-oriented leadership development program for high school students, while pursuing a Masters of Education in Youth Development at University of Illinois at Chicago.
Colleen O’Connor received her MFA in nonfiction from Columbia College.
She lives in Chicago, where she is the managing editor of Switchback Books and the content and grant manager at Northwestern University’s Family Institute. She has published work in journals including [PANK], Columbia Poetry Review and Another Chicago Magazine.
