1. Study Abroad UK (Spring Break 2025)
Still feeling the Halloween spirit? Apply for DePaul’s “Gothic Monsters” study abroad to the UK! Applications are open to both grads and undergrads.
Application deadline: November 1
Itinerary: London, Bath, Whitby, and Edinburgh
View the Spring Break 2025 program list at https://programsabroad.depaul.edu/. Click “United Kingdom: Gothic Monsters” for full program details and an application link!
Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are three of the most influential works of literature in the English language, all featuring at their heart a gothic monster that seized on the popular imagination of the time. These stories have been adapted into film, television, comics, and video games and their eponymous characters imported into new works by readers, writers, and fans for a hundred years or more.
Students accepted to this program will be enrolled in ENG 286/475 (Topics in Popular Literature) for this spring quarter and MPOP 363/520 (Topics in Fandom: Fan Tourism) for the upcoming winter quarter.
ENG 286: Topics in Popular Literature will pair each novel with a contemporary adaptation that reframes the work for new and more diverse audiences, such as Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmad Saadawi, Gwendolyn Kiste’s “The Eight People Who Murdered Me,” and My Dear Henry: A Jekyll and Hyde Remix by Kalynn Bayron. The course will look at the historical and cultural frameworks that influenced the writing of each book and dissect what makes contemporary audiences return to these stories over and over again. Students will also discuss how Dracula itself is a fan text, a response of sorts to Sheridan Le Fanu’s earlier work Carmilla.
MPOP 363: Topics in Fan Studies will explore fan reaction to gothic monsters, including examining the way that fans create their own stories and ideas. In addition, we will study the tourist practices of fandom, focusing on the unique styles and modes of travel enacted by gothic monster fans.
