Monday Reminders + Spirit of DePaul Award Nominations Now Open

Spirit of DePaul Award

(The information below has been copied from the Division of Mission and Ministry.)

Deadline: May 9, 2025, 5:00 PM CST

About:

Nominations are now being accepted for the Spirit of DePaul Award. All faculty, staff and students are welcome to submit recommendations for consideration.

The purpose of the award is to honor university employees whose leadership and service to students and the university represent the spirit exemplified by our patron, St. Vincent de Paul.

Nomination criteria:

  • Achievement: The nominee by their presence and works has made a significant contribution to DePaul University over a period of time (at least 5 years).
  • Vincentian Spirit: The nominee personally exemplifies the mission and values of DePaul University.

Award Eligibility

  • Full-time staff and faculty, adjunct faculty, and emeritus faculty who are still teaching at DePaul are eligible for this award. All nominees must have worked at least 5 consecutive years at DePaul to be considered, and nominations must be submitted by someone other than the nominee.

We suggest you review the list of past awardees before nominating someone as only those who have never received the award can be considered. An alphabetical list of past awardees can be found here.

Honorees will be chosen by a committee of past award winners, led by Dr. Mark Laboe, interim Vice President of Mission and Ministry, and will be presented to President Manuel for his approval. Awards will be presented at the beginning of the fall 2025 term.

Please note that if you are lifting up faculty largely for their excellence in teaching and working with students, we encourage you to instead work within Academic Affairs to suggest your nominee for an Excellence in Teaching award.

We suggest you create your two responses to the nomination questions ahead of filling out the online nomination form and then cut and paste them into Qualtrics form. The two questions are:

  1. We invite you to provide specific evidence about the impact of the nominee’s work relative to their current role. It would be helpful to get a sense of the magnitude of the impact the nominee had and on whom or what. This question is asking for how the nominee’s work and service positively impacted DePaul, and not just how they do their work in a mission-based way.  Embodiment of mission will be addressed in question #2.  High-level outcomes and basic data if available would be appreciated. Whether the impact was short-term or ongoing – this award seeks candidates whose work has made a significant contribution to DePaul University over a period of time. (WORD LIMIT:  300)
  2. In this question we ask you to provide examples of how the nominee exemplifies the Vincentian spirit and embraces DePaul’s mission and/or values based on your understanding of the university’s mission and its core values. Please share specific evidence on how this candidate embodies the Vincentian spirit. Feel free to reply informally and briefly (bullets are fine). (WORD LIMIT: 300)

Letters of support are not expected as part of the nomination process. However some nominators like to include them, so there is an opportunity on the nomination form to upload a single pdf file of combined letters. On a related note, nominees can be nominated by multiple people who need not coordinate.

If you have any questions about the award, please direct them to Mark Laboe, mlaboe@depaul.edu.
