In just two days we get to flip our calendars and datebooks over to a new month. Chances are you’ve already got some things written in there, but just in case your days are looking a little bare, we’ve got a great list of October events for you today.  Hope to see you there!

Oct. 3rd — Are you a DePaul graduate student who is 24+ and/or a veteran? Do you enjoy free food and massages? The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Graduate Student Services Office is co-hosting an event with the office of Adult Student Affairs to help you relax and take a break from the stress of midterms. Join them for a break in your day for food and massages. The event is this coming Monday from 4pm-6pm and will be held in the 990 W. Fullerton Building, Room 125, Ste 100 in Lincoln Park.

Oct. 4th– Chicago’s acclaimed Fifth House Ensemble will perform Black Violet (Act 1), an original story of the Black Plague told through classical music, with images by graphic novelist Ezra Clayton Daniels at our very own Cortelyou Commons, from 7-8:30pm. Fifth House Ensemble harnesses the collaborative spirit of chamber music to create transformative cross-media performance experiences that bring together elements as diverse as storytelling, physical theatre, graphic novels, and fashion design. Oct. 6th– Writer Michael Ondaatje, author of five novels including The English Patient, a memoir, a nonfiction book on film, and eleven books of poetry, presents his new novel, The Cat’s Table, at Fullerton Hall in the Art Institute of Chicago.  The event will take place at 6pm and a booksigning will follow. Oct. 12th– For the next DePaul Humanities Center event, Audrey Niffenegger, Columbia College creative writing professor and author of the novels The Time Traveler’s Wife, and  Her Fearful Symmetry and the graphic novels The Three Incestuous Sisters, The Adventuress, and The Night Bookmobile, will be reading, answering questions, and signing books in the SAC rm. 254 from 6-7pm. The event is free and open to the public.

 

 

Oct. 15th-16th– All are welcome to participate in Women’s Voices Weekend, presented by Women and Children First bookstore. Workshops with DePaul’s own Achy Obejas, as well as Dorothy Allison, Nami Mun, Esther Hershenhorn, and Donna Seaman will be held at the Swedish American Museum at 5211 N. Clark. Workshops are $35 each for students and are limited to 15 people each, so sign up soon! A cocktail party with the featured authors will be held on the 15th from 6:30-8 at Women and Children First, $10 per ticket. And the weekend will finish with a Reading and Conversation with Achy Obejas, Dorothy Allison, Nami Mun, and Donna Seaman on the 16th from 4:30 to 6pm at the Swedish American Museum, also $10 per ticket. Oct. 19– Take some time to network. The DePaul Career Center presents Making Connections: Careers in Communication & Writing. A panel of successful communication professionals and writers will share insights and provide guidance to those who wish to pursue a career in journalism, creative writing, technical writing, media studies, and more.
